Margo Lazareva is a new addition to the Dina Malkova’s team. She works in Nuno felting and creates unique scarves from silk, cotton and raw wool fibres.

Felting is an ancient textile art, where by manipulating wool with soapy water and rolling squeezing and throwing, one creates a very special and unique piece. Nuno Felting

is a technique where one applies soapy water and pressure over wool placed on silk chiffon or gauze scarf. This forces the fibres to migrate into the weave of the silk fabric that is being used.

Margo lives and works in the UK and originally comes from Uzbekistan.

I have asked her a few questions:

How did you start your business?

I have been sewing and knitting all my life, but mainly as a hobby for myself, relatives and friends. In the UK I met lots of like-minded people who have helped me to develop my hobby into a small business. I make scarves, cushions, bedcovers, baby blankets and greeting cards. I absolutely love mixing different types of textiles.

What is the inspiration behind your work?

My inspiration is everywhere - homes, gardens, people, shops windows, newspapers and plants in the forest. Quite often I find myself even lost in inspiration and ideas coming to me so I had to learn how to control myself (lol). When is too much, it is very confusing!

Do you see the benefits of using traditional hand skills?

Certainly! I can say that the greatest benefit of using hand skills for me is like giving life to an object. When you create something, it owns a piece of your soul, mind, feelings and taste. This is why handmade objects are precious and unique.

How would you describe your creative process?

Sometimes I sketch or gain inspiration from materials. I feel like a child in a sweet shop when I am in a yarn store: I want to buy everything! The process begins when I find beautiful yarn. I make the first samples for myself; I'll never sell anything that I wouldn't wear.

Please tell us about your two new scarves we offer at the Dina Malkova online shop?

There are two new scarves. One is hand felted scarf “Violet rainbow” made with luxury merino wool and mulberry silk. It is a very thin, light with wonderful silky sheen scarf. This scarf is incredibly soft, superfine and warm, it also drapes beautifully.

Another scarf is a romantic “Wild rose” hand felted scarf made with soft merino wool and silk layered upon a light organic cotton muslin base. It is lightweight, yet warm, gorgeous textured scarf. The drape is flowing and gentle.
